After registration at Machame Gate, the trek begins through dense and beautiful rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, but the forest scenery makes it rewarding. You walk under tall trees covered in moss and listen to birds and monkeys along the way. The gradual climb helps your body begin adapting to the altitude. You arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon, surrounded by forest, where you relax and enjoy your first night on the mountain.
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steadily into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter, and the views begin to open up. On clear days, you get your first full view of Kibo Peak. The path is rocky in sections and steadily uphill, but the pace is slow and controlled to support acclimatization. Shira Camp sits on the Shira Plateau, offering wide open views and a dramatic sunset.
This is a key acclimatization day. You hike uphill toward Lava Tower, reaching a higher altitude before descending again. The landscape becomes alpine and barren, with volcanic rock formations and wide open space. After lunch near Lava Tower, you descend into the Barranco Valley. This “climb high, sleep low” approach greatly improves your chances of summit success. Barranco Camp is set in a scenic valley below the towering Barranco Wall, one of the most photographed spots on the route.
The day begins with a climb up the Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, it is more of a fun scramble than a technical climb, and guides assist where needed. Once on top, you are rewarded with stunning views of the southern glaciers. The trail then winds up and down across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. This is a shorter trekking day, allowing extra time to rest and acclimatize.
Today’s trek is short but steep, leading you to Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit. The terrain is rocky and exposed, with little vegetation. You arrive by midday to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit attempt. Guides give a detailed briefing, and you eat an early dinner before trying to sleep. The excitement builds as you get ready for the midnight climb.
You wake around midnight and begin the most challenging part of the trek. The ascent is slow and steady over loose scree in cold and windy conditions. You reach Stella Point at sunrise, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most demanding day, both physically and mentally.
Description:
The final day is a gentle descent through lush rainforest. The air becomes warmer and oxygen-rich, and the trail can be slippery after rain. You arrive at Mweka Gate where you sign out of the park and receive your summit certificates before transferring back to your hotel for a well-earned rest.
