After arrival at Marangu Gate, you complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. The trek begins through a beautiful rainforest filled with tall trees, ferns, and moss-covered paths. The trail is gentle and well-maintained, making this a relaxed introduction to Kilimanjaro. Along the way, you may spot blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The day ends at Mandara Hut, where you settle in, enjoy dinner, and rest for the night.
Today the forest gradually thins out and gives way to open moorland. The views expand, and on clear days you can enjoy impressive sights of both Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. The trail climbs steadily but at a comfortable pace, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. Giant heathers and lobelias appear along the route, creating a classic Kilimanjaro landscape. You arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, a lively camp with wide views and a cooler climate.
This day takes you across the Saddle, a vast and dry alpine desert lying between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain is open and exposed, with little vegetation. Although the trail is not steep, the altitude makes the walk more demanding. You move slowly and steadily, focusing on breathing and hydration. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit attempt.
You wake around midnight and begin the most challenging part of the climb. The ascent to Gilman’s Point is steep and slow, walking step by step in the cold and darkness. As the sun rises, the trail continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and brunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut. This is the longest and toughest day of the trek.
The final day is a long but pleasant descent. You walk back through moorland and re-enter the rainforest, where the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen. The trail can be muddy, so care is needed. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, you sign out of the park and receive your summit certificates before transferring back to your hotel for a well-earned rest.
