The trek begins on the remote northern side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. After registration at Nalemoru Gate, you walk through farmland and pine forest before entering open moorland. The trail is gentle and quiet, making it a relaxed start with minimal crowds.
Today’s hike is a steady ascent with wide views of the Kenyan plains. The vegetation thins as you move higher, and the trail remains gradual, allowing good acclimatization. Mawenzi Peak becomes more visible as you approach camp.
The route becomes steeper but shorter. The scenery changes to alpine vegetation with giant groundsels and lobelias. The campsite sits in a sheltered valley at the base of Mawenzi, offering a peaceful and scenic overnight stop.
A short but steep climb leads you to Mawenzi Tarn, set directly beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak. This is an important acclimatization day, with plenty of time to rest, explore, and enjoy the spectacular high-mountain scenery.
You cross the Saddle, a wide and barren alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail is long but mostly flat. Walking slowly and staying hydrated is key. You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon to rest and prepare for the summit climb.
You begin the summit attempt around midnight. The climb is slow and steady to Gilman’s Point, followed by a traverse to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After a brief celebration, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut.
The final day is a long descent through moorland and rainforest. The air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen. At Marangu Gate, you sign out and receive your summit certificates before transfer to your hotel.
